How to Get Your International Student Card in Madrid

If you’re coming to Madrid as an Erasmus student, one of the smartest things you can do is get the International Student Identity Card (ISIC). This card is recognized worldwide and gives you access to thousands of discounts — from museums and cinemas to transport, shops, and even flights. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is the ISIC Card?

The ISIC card is an official student card recognized in more than 135 countries. It proves your student status internationally and connects you to a network of more than 150,000 discounts on culture, food, travel, and leisure.

In Madrid, it can be especially useful for saving money while exploring the city.

Benefits of Having an ISIC Card in Madrid

Museums & culture: Cheaper entry to places like Prado Museum, Reina Sofía, and Royal Palace.

Transport discounts: Reduced prices for long-distance trains, buses, and even metro offers.

Food & cafés: Discounts at selected restaurants and chains popular among students.

Shopping: Savings on clothing stores, tech, and school supplies.

Travel deals: Student prices for flights, hostels, and tours.

Requirements

To apply for your ISIC card you need:

  1. A valid student ID from your university or enrollment certificate.
  2. A passport-sized photo (digital if applying online).
  3. A copy of your passport or national ID card.

The cost is usually around 15 € and is valid for one academic year.

Tip for Erasmus Students in Madrid

  • If you combine the ISIC with Madrid’s own Abono Transporte Joven (Youth Transport Card, under 26 years), you’ll save a lot on both city transport and travel across Spain.
  • Always ask in shops, museums, or hostels if they accept ISIC — sometimes discounts aren’t advertised but are available on request.
