Cost of Living in Madrid 2025 – Erasmus Edition

1. Accommodation (Alojamiento)

  • Renting a room in a shared flat: Expect ~ €300-€600/month, depending on neighborhood, size, amenities.
  • Private studio / one-bedroom in the city center: ~ €900-€1,200/month. Suburbs are cheaper, ~ €600-€850.
  • Student residences with all bills included: can be more expensive, ~ €1,050+ depending on what’s included (utilities, cleaning, social areas).
  • Note: shared flats also mean sharing utilities, internet, etc., which lowers individual cost.

2. Food & Groceries

  • Monthly groceries: €150-€300 depending on what you buy and how often you eat out.
  • Typical supermarket item prices:
    • Milk (1 liter): ~ €0.90-€1.20
    • Bread (1 loaf): ~ €1-€2.50
    • Chicken (1kg): ~ €7-€12
  • Eating out:
    • Budget café / small restaurant: €10-€15 for a menú del día or casual meal
    • Mid-range restaurant, 3 course: ~ €50 for two people.

3. Transport & Getting Around

  • Monthly public transport passes (metro + bus) for regular zones: ~ €50-€55
  • Abono Joven (youth pass under ~26): huge savings (as low as €10/month) in many cases.
  • Single metro/bus ticket: ~ €1.50-€2.50 depending on distance / zone.
  • Utilities (electricity, water, gas, garbage): ~ €100-€160/month, depending on apartment size, consumption and winter heating / summer AC needs.

4. Utilities, Internet & Other Basics

  • Internet + phone plan: ~ €15-€40/month depending on data, speed.
  • Utility bills (not included in rent): see above (water, electricity, heating) ~ €100-€160 plus splits if shared.

5. Leisure, Entertainment & Extras

  • Coffee: ~ €2-€3 for a regular coffee in a café.
  • Beer in a bar: ~ €3-€5 depending on location.
  • Going out / nightlife: many bars have cheap drinks before midnight; a mid-night out might cost more depending on venue.
  • Gym memberships: ~ €25-€50/month depending on the gym.
