Surviving Madrid’s Climate as an Erasmus Student

Moving to Madrid for your Erasmus adventure? One thing you’ll quickly notice is how much the weather can shape your experience. From crisp autumn mornings to sunny winter days and scorching summers, knowing how to adapt will make your stay much more enjoyable. Here’s your ultimate guide to surviving Madrid’s climate from October onwards.

🍂 October – November: Cozy Autumn Vibes

Autumn in Madrid is magical — warm colors, sunny afternoons, and cooler nights.

  • Average temperatures: 10–20°C
  • What to wear: Layer up! Bring a light jacket or hoodie, comfy jeans, and maybe a scarf for evenings.
  • Erasmus tip: Perfect months for picnics at El Retiro or exploring Madrid’s parks before it gets too cold.

❄️ December – February: Mild but Chilly Winters

Madrid winters are cold but not extreme — snow is rare in the city but possible in the mountains.

  • Average temperatures: 4–12°C (can drop close to 0°C at night)
  • What to wear: A warm coat, gloves, and good shoes (especially if you plan trips to Sierra de Guadarrama for snow).
  • Erasmus tip: This is the season of Christmas lights, churros with chocolate, and visiting Madrid’s Christmas markets — so pack something cozy and festive.

🌸 March – May: Spring Awakening

Spring is one of the best times to be in Madrid — flowers bloom, terraces reopen, and temperatures are just right.

  • Average temperatures: 12–22°C
  • What to wear: Lighter jackets, sneakers, and sunglasses.
  • Erasmus tip: This is perfect hiking season — join Erasmus hiking trips or weekend getaways while it’s not too hot.

🔥 June – September: Summer Heatwave Survival

If you’re staying beyond summer, brace yourself: Madrid summers are HOT.

  • Average temperatures: 25–38°C (July & August can exceed 40°C)
  • What to wear: Breathable clothing, hats, and always carry water.
  • Erasmus tip: Adjust your schedule — Madrileños avoid going out between 2–6 pm. Try evening plans and take advantage of rooftop bars and swimming pools.
