Whether you love cultural experiences or just want an excuse to dress up and celebrate with friends, this festival is a must-live experience in the city.

When is Madrid Carnival 2026?
The Carnival in Madrid will take place from February 14 to February 18, 2026.
During these five days, the city hosts dozens of free events for locals, students, and tourists. Most activities happen around Matadero Madrid and Madrid Río Park, which become the main hubs of celebration.
Events you can enjoy at the carnival

The Carnival Parade (Opening Event)
The festival begins with a huge parade full of:
- Giant puppets and “big heads”
- Street theater and circus acts
- Live music and performances
- Hundreds of people in costumes
The parade usually takes place along Madrid Río, starting near Puente de Toledo and heading toward Matadero.
This is one of the most Instagram-worthy moments of the entire festival.
Murgas, Chirigotas & Street Shows
During the weekend you’ll find comedy musical groups performing satirical songs about politics, society, and everyday life. These performances are a traditional Spanish carnival element and are free to watch in public squares.
There are also:
- Dance performances
- Costume competitions
- Workshops and activities

Manteo del Pelele (Traditional Ritual)
One of the most unique traditions happens on February 15. A straw doll called “pelele” is tossed into the air on a blanket by participants — symbolizing the playful spirit of Carniva
Burial of the Sardine (Closing Ceremony)
The festival ends on February 18, 2026, with Madrid’s most famous Carnival tradition:
The Entierro de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine).
This symbolic parade includes:
- Costumed mourners
- Music and marching bands
- A ceremonial burning of a sardine figure
It starts near San Antonio de la Florida and ends in Casa de Campo Park with a bonfire.
This marks the end of Carnival and the beginning of Lent.
