Health Tips for Erasmus in Madrid: Insurance & Pharmacies

1. Health Insurance: A Must for Erasmus Students

  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC): If you’re an Erasmus student from the EU, bring your EHIC. This allows you to access public healthcare in Spain under the same conditions as locals.
  • Non-EU Students: You’ll need private health insurance. Many universities in Madrid request proof of coverage when registering. Look for plans that cover emergencies, general healthcare, and hospitalization.
  • Extra tip: Some Erasmus students also buy additional insurance to cover dental care, repatriation, or extra services not included in the basic plan.

2. Pharmacies in Madrid: Easy to Find and Reliable

  • Pharmacies are everywhere, marked with a green cross sign.
  • They open Monday–Friday (9:30–14:00 and 17:00–20:00) and Saturday mornings.
  • In Madrid, you’ll also find 24-hour pharmacies (farmacias de guardia). There’s always at least one per neighborhood open at night or on Sundays.
  • Staff can help you with over-the-counter medicine and basic health advice. For antibiotics or prescription drugs, you’ll need a doctor’s prescription.

3. Where to Go if You’re Sick

  • Public Health Centers (Centros de Salud): Free or low-cost care with EHIC or Spanish insurance.
  • Hospitals: For emergencies, Madrid has excellent hospitals like Hospital Clínico San Carlos and Hospital La Paz.
  • Private Clinics: Faster appointments but more expensive if not covered by your insurance.

4. Practical Tips

  • Always carry your passport/ID and insurance card when going to a doctor or pharmacy.
  • Download “Farmacias de Guardia Madrid” app or check online for the nearest 24h pharmacy.
  • Save emergency numbers:
  • 112 → General emergencies (ambulance, police, fire).
  • 061 → Health emergencies.

5. Why This Matters for Erasmus Students

Being prepared with the right insurance and knowing where to find pharmacies will save you stress (and money) during your stay. Madrid is very student-friendly, and with these tips, you’ll feel safer and more confident living abroad.
