How to Get Around Madrid: Metro, Bus, Bike & Useful Apps

Moving around Madrid as an Erasmus student is easier than you might think! The city has one of the best public transport networks in Europe, and you’ll always find a way to get from point A to point B quickly and affordably. Here’s everything you need to know

Metro de Madrid

  • Madrid’s metro is the second largest in Europe and covers almost every neighborhood.
  • Trains run from 6:00 am to 1:30 am.
  • It’s the fastest way to move across the city, especially for long distances.

You can download the official Metro de Madrid app to check routes, schedules, and line closures in real time. (But for me, i like Moovit more)

Buses in Madrid

  • EMT buses run throughout the city, reaching areas not directly connected by metro.
  • They usually operate from 6:00 am to 11:30 pm, and there are also night buses (Búhos) leaving from Cibeles Square after midnight.
  • The Abono Joven card also includes unlimited bus rides.

Night buses are super useful after going out—cheaper than a taxi and safer when traveling in groups.

Biking in Madrid (BiciMAD)

  • Madrid has a public bike-sharing system called BiciMAD.
  • You can find electric bikes all over the city, perfect for short trips and eco-friendly travel.
  • There are monthly passes and pay-per-use options.

Combine bikes with the metro or bus for faster trips when the distance is longer.

Taxis & Ride-Sharing

  • Taxis are safe and official, but they can be expensive compared to public transport.
  • Apps like Uber, Bolt, or Cabify work well in Madrid and are often cheaper than traditional taxis.
